Surfing on the southern and eastern coast

If surfing happens to be your favourite sport and hitting the sandy point breaks in 30 degrees seems like a good idea, and tropical, sunny weather sounds appealing to you, Sri Lanka is calling your name. On the eastern coast, you can find Arugam Bay. The location has become a surfing mecca in the region for pros, and many competitions are held during the peak seasons, typically, from December onwards. However, Arugambay is ideal for seasoned surfers. Beginners can try the beach at Weligama, which is on the southern coast and close to Mirissa. Hiriketiya Bay off Dickwella is also a great place to try surfing for newbies, as well as Hikkaduwa. The waves are gentle and the scenery stunning in these regions! There are enough surfing schools available at affordable prices if you want to learn from scratch. Resorts in Kalutara the likes of Avani Kalutara Resort is among the options worth considering for accommodation.

 Snorkelling/Scuba diving

The Sri Lankan waters are rich in marine and coral life. A newcomer can quickly get trained to experience scuba diving as well. Pigeon Island near Trincomalee in the Eastern province, Kalpitya, Hikkaduwa, and Unawatuna on the southern coast are good locations for diving and snorkelling. The centres will provide the equipment and a trainer when registering for their courses. If you do not have a diving licence that too will be provided once the course is completed. Just make sure you check for credentials before signing up! Many hotels offer such activities for guests, as part of their packages as well. So, you can inquire about your accommodation for any deals and recommendations available.

 Kite surfing

Kitesurfing is a unique sport and blends windsurfing, surfing, snowboarding, paragliding and gymnastics! A high-powered kite guides and directs the force of the wind to propel you. The kite is connected to a kiteboard, and the individual gets firmly secured into it with foot straps.

The constant windy conditions in Kalpitiya and the light sandbar that separates the lagoon and the sea form perfect conditions for kitesurfing. Kalpitiya has gained a name as the best beach for kitesurfing on the island. You can find many schools close to the beach, eager and willing to show you the ropes. It may seem scary at first but addictive once you get the hang of it.

 White water rafting

Kitulgala River was the location where the classic film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was filmed. It also happens to be the most popular location in Sri Lanka for white water rafting. There are plenty of operators found in Kithulgala town with whom you can try out white water rafting. Or else, inquire your accommodation for recommendations. Usually, 3 to 6 people are taken into the water at a given time. Guides will instruct the group on the basics, such as safety measures and manoeuvring. Camping close to Riverside is a popular activity as well. Other locations for rafting, although not as famous, are Sitawaka River, Ulpane in Gampola and at Kotmale River in Hatton, Nuwara Eliya.

 Deep-sea diving

Challenge yourself to examine the watery expanses of the warm Indian Ocean with a deep-sea diving session. You can find many PADI certified Diving centres all over the coastlines. Negambo, Pigeon Island, Batticaloa, Passikuda, Kirinda, Nilaveli, Barracuda Reef in Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna are some of the favourite locations enthusiasts can check out while in Sri Lanka.
