How to do city hopping in Vietnam by train

Vietnam is a truly vast nation spread across a large area with each of its cities and towns offering something different to experience. To traverse these huge distances, some choose to take flights; while this may save time, for a rewarding sightseeing experience opting for more cost-effective train travel is worth considering. Not only will you get the chance to witness the spellbinding beauty of the countryside and the coast, but it will reduce your carbon footprint too!

Take the Reunification Express

One of the best ways to travel by train in Vietnam is to go along the Reunification Express; this famed route spans a whopping 1,726 km and connects Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi. While you can begin or end the journey at either one of these two cities, ideally look to break up your journey with stops at other destinations / cities along the way. Those interested in more train journeys can also travel from Hanoi to places such as Ha Long and Sapa.

Head to Mui Ne

If you take the Reunification Express from Ho Chi Minh City, one of the easiest trips to make would be the one to visit Mui Ne; you will need to get off at Binh Thuan (around a four-hour journey) and from there, take a taxi to this coastal town.

Well-known for its sublime beach, Mui Ne offers an ideal seaside escape where you can also enjoy water sports, especially kitesurfing. Local attractions like the White and Red Sand Dunes are worth visiting as well.

Visit Da Nang and Hoi An

Another stop on the Reunification Express is Da Nang; this coastal city features a French colonial port not forgetting some picturesque beaches to soak up the sun and have fun in the sand and surf. From here, you can head to the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the My Son Sanctuary with its many temples.

Da Nang also makes an ideal base from which to visit Hoi An. This city in central Vietnam offers much to explore at its historic quarter which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site too; you will find sites of interest like the 16th century Japanese Bridge, while also of note is the nearby Hoi An Night Market where you can purchase all kinds of goods and sample local dishes.

Explore Quy Nhon

For more coastal bliss include a visit to Quy Nhon on your train journeys. While the Reunification Express does not have a stop here, it does have one at the nearby Dieu Tri Train Station; local hotels and resorts the likes of Anantara Quy Nhon Villas do offer limousine services from the station which makes transfers that much more convenient.

This part of Vietnam has lots of amazing shorelines to head to including one in the main city as well as the Ky Co and Bai Xep beaches. In Quy Nhon, restaurants and local eateries provide plenty of culinary adventures to look forward to, while one can also plan visits to historical Cham sites such as the ancient Thap Doi Towers.

Stop Over at Nha Trang

More fun on the coast awaits travellers alighting the train at Nha Trang. A popular destination for those who love partying as well, this resort town features a laidback vibe with much to do apart from spending time at the beach; one can enjoy foodie discoveries, embark on diving excursions, experience spa rejuvenation and visit historical sites. You can also look to take an amazing oversea journey via an aerial cable car to Hon Tre Island which offers lots of family fun at the Vinpearl Amusement Park.
