It is a truck converted into a taxi and can accommodate around 8-10 people, and standing passengers are all so common. The vehicle has added cushioned benches to make seating comfortable. Luggage is usually hauled on top of the vehicle. It is the most economical means of getting about in Koh Samui, apart from walking. Songthaews will circle the main roads, but very rarely do they have a designated route. If you are going towards a popular attraction, it is very likely you will encounter a few along the way. All you have to do is stand by the roadside and haul one down. Say where you want to be dropped off and agree on the price. It is a great means of interacting with locals and making some new friends. When your close to the stop, ring the bell inside, pay the money and get off at your stop!

Make the rates known in advance as meters are not commonly used. You can attempt to negotiate a little, but foreigners usually will have little success.

A scooter taxi is another great option especially if one is travelling solo. They cost much less than a regular taxi. It’s a quick and fast option to get from point A to B.

Vehicle rentals

Book a car rental if you want the ultimate freedom of travel and comfort. One can comfortably explore the island at your own pace with a car at your beck and call. You can get a driver as well or drive your own car. Car rentals can be found without too much hassle all over Koh Samui. If not a car, opt for a scooter or motorbike rental. It is a popular option amongst locals and foreigners alike. But be wary, Koh Samui has a high accident rate and most occur on scooters. Wear your helmet at all times and follow the road rules.

Rent a bike

The healthiest and greenest way to travel around Koh Samui would be to rent a bicycle. There are guided bicycle tours as well if you would prefer some expertise or company for those travelling alone. However, bear in mind that Koh Samui can get very hot, and cycling in the hot sun for long distances can get tiring. Take plenty of sun cover and adequate liquids with you when exploring. The traffic too can get quite chaotic for a little island, so be cautious on the road. Another aspect to keep in mind is that all roads are not equal, and some can get very steep, hilly and have cracks. If looking for a resort in Koh Samui, options such as Avani+ Samui Resort are among the sound choices available.

By foot

Walking is a great way to explore the surroundings of where you are staying. However, as there are so many places to visit and things to do in Koh Samui that it might not be the most practical choice. If you are an avid walker, however, you can attempt to walk to at least your nearest destinations.
