How to Spend 48 hours in Koh Samui

If you are pressed for time on your Thailand getaway and have only two days to spend in Koh Samui, then some proper planning is in order! There is much to see and do on this enchanting island which also offers the ideal setting to unwind. Striking the balance is important and this guide provides some insights to help you do just that.

Prepare For Your Getaway

As mentioned, planning is key, so before delving into the things to do in Koh Samui on your two-day holiday, spend time preparing for your travels.

Firstly, you should decide on when you plan to go. The dry season is when the weather is at its glorious best and the seas are calm; as you might expect, the rates and prices are higher too! The hot season (April to August) and the rainy season (September to November) have soaring temperatures and rainy weather respectively, though not all day, while rates are comparatively lower.

When it comes to getting to Koh Samui, you can travel by air or sea. Flying to the Samui International Airport is the fastest way to get to the island though it is also the costliest. A cheaper though longer option in terms of travel time would be to take a ferry; this can be done from nearby islands or Surat Thani.

Consider finding accommodation beside the beach because that’s the best way to enjoy a sublime seaside escape. For the best beaches to stay at, consider places like Bophut, Lamai and Chaweng; hotel and resort options can be found at such destinations and provide ideal getaways.

Plan the Day One Itinerary

On your first day, make sure to allocate time for relaxation at the beach; when staying at a resort by the shore you can easily start your day with some yoga on the sand, followed by some sunbathing. Properties the likes of Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort offer water sports such as snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing as well.

After having fun in the sand and surf, you can visit some of the many shrines and temples in Koh Samui; attractions such as the huge golden Buddha statue and shrine, Wat Plai Laem and Wat Khunaram with its mummified monk are amongst the popular choices. Nature lovers can alternatively visit the Na Muang Waterfall which offers a captivating hiking experience too.

Once the sun sets, experience the thrilling nightlife in Koh Samui which offers everything from wild parties to laidback nights by the sea. The hub for such night-time escapades is undoubtedly Chaweng, home to plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants while you can take in ladyboy cabaret shows or Muay Thai boxing as well. You will also find beach clubs here, perfect for some chilled-out relaxation.

Plan the Day Two Itinerary

As the second day dawns, consider embarking on some excursions; Koh Samui makes an ideal base from which to take a trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park where you can explore islands with pristine beaches, snorkel in clear waters and discover hidden coves. Another option would be to take a half-day cruise to the island of Koh Phangan where you can look forward to more beachside bliss.

Once back, make sure to experience some pampering at a spa; resorts in Koh Samui with their own spas offer more convenience in this regard and you can be enjoying soothing massages, rejuvenating body scrubs and traditional healing rituals in no time.

Time permitting, you can end the day by going out and about to savour authentic street food which can be found at street-side eateries. Not to be missed is a chance to also visit some of the street markets at night where more foodie adventures await along with a great array of bargain items. Options include Chaweng Walking Street (Monday to Thursday and Saturday), Fisherman’s Village Walking Street (Friday) and Lamai Walking Street (Sunday).
