How to plan a cruise to Maldives

The Maldives needs no explanation when it comes to holidays in bliss perhaps in an overwater villa or on a private island that's reserved just for you and your family. What could possibly be better than this? Why it's a cruise in the Maldives of course!

The Maldivian islands

To begin with let's look at the archipelago as a whole. It consists of several atolls and reefs which all amount to over a thousand islands in total. If you focus your holiday on simply one of the Maldives villas offered by a particular resort, your adventure might just be limited to that one island. Although, some of these resorts such as Kuramathi Maldives offer a range of activities to keep you occupied. If you are unable to embark on a luxury cruise, properties such as these offer awesome opportunities for sunset cruises to islands close by. It might not account for the full experience, but it is definitely a memorable one. With so much to explore, a few islands are even still abandoned (perfect for those with the abandoned on an island adventure in mind). Opting for a cruise will help you explore not just the many islands but the waters as well.

The perfect duration for your Maldives cruise

Generally, if you are holidaying in the Maldives on an island or a cruise, 5 days is the maximum duration for your holiday in the Maldives. One reason for this is that more than 5 days can be overly expensive as the islands are known for luxurious resorts and cruises. The other reason would be that there is a chance you'll end up getting bored.

What to expect

So, cruises in the Maldives can be on a luxury cruise liner or a private catamaran...the choice is all yours. The facilities on the ship would include a pool and deck, fabulous rooms and fantastic food to keep you in ultimate comfort. Furthermore, cruise ships often plan out an itinerary which includes stops at various islands and onshore experiences as well. So, come prepared to experience water sports and to just let go and sunbathe on an island beach if time permits. For most of the time, you will be on the waters of the ocean. Therefore, remember to bring along some pills if you get seasick.

When to go on a cruise in the Maldives

The Maldives is a tropical island which means there aren't four seasons here. Instead, there are just 2 of them which is the wet season and the dry season. During the wet season, humidity is quite high, and downpours are often unpredictable. You will not be able to explore land or underwater to the fullest extent. Although this is so, rates on cruises and resorts go cheap during this time of year. The dry season that comes in from November to April is the best time to visit the Maldives when the island receives very less rainfall and the waters of the ocean are clear for exploring. The days are bright and sunny and perfect for some time at the beach as well.

A few tips

There are 2 ways to go on a cruise in the Maldives. One would be to board a cruise leaving for the Maldives from neighbouring countries to the islands. The other option would be to fly over to the Maldives and board a cruise ship from the port here.

Remember to pack light as usual with the basics like sun cream, sunglasses, any prescribed medication, your swimsuit and light clothing that isn't too revealing. Of course, going on a cruise also means that you will need your passport even if you are boarding from your home country. You are travelling overseas after all!
