If you are visiting Oman, Nizwa is a city that you should consider visiting. It is situated in an isolated location in the Hajar Mountains. There are many interesting places to see and explore in Nizwa, mostly places relevant to historical importance that you can explore. Forts take the centre point in Nizwa’s attractions. 1. Nizwa Fort

This is the most prominent element of Nizwa as a town. It is a 35-metre-high fort that towers over the whole town. It is a circular structure that has a diameter of over 46 metres. There is a winding staircase that goes to the top of the fort that is considered to be the fighting platform. This is protected in many places through different structures on the roof. For example, there was a slot through which boiling dates can be poured on those who attempted to attack the fort. This has made the fort one of the most inaccessible places in the region. Among the things to do in Nizwavisiting the fort is a must-do.

2. Nizwa Souq

Souq refers to an ancient market in the Arabian language. There are Souqs in almost every major city and town in Oman. They are great places to check out local vendors, experience how shopping happens between locals, and more. The Nizwa Souq is placed right beneath the shadow of the fort. The ancient market has been not covered by a modern arcade. Many shops and vendors are selling a variety of items from jewellery, food, knives, clothes, etc. It is a great place to see the local culture unravel. There is also a livestock auction that happens in the souq over the weekend.

3. Around Nizwa

While Nizwa along is quite a limited area with only a few things to see, many places around the town are worth checking out if you are staying at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. Your guide at the hotel should be able to tell you about the best places to visit based on the season. Nizwa alone won’t take a full day to explore. So it is good to add a few other places to your itinerary during your visit.

4. Jabreen

Jabreen is a town that is situated north of Nizwa. It is also home to a massive fort and is thought to house the best fort in the whole country. It has a collection of artefacts that have been well preserved to depict the life of their ancestors. The most mesmerising feature of Jabreen is the painted ceilings in the fort.  This can be a true gem for those who are interested in the art and culture of the region. It is believed to be one of the best examples of decorative art in Oman. Make sure to visit Jabreen during your trip to Nizwa.

5. Bahla

This is another interesting place to visit during your Nizwa trip. Situated towards the south of Nizwa, this town is recognised globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to a massive fort and defence complex. The fort is over 50 m tall and there is a village at its foot. Pottery is the most renowned professional in Bahal and many places are selling high-quality items. If you want to take some pots and ornaments home with you, this is an excellent place to buy them. It is also a great place to understand the culture and traditions of ancient Oman.
