 About Laos

Laos is a Southeast Asian landlocked nation near the Mekong River, with a spectacular mountainous landscape, French colonial structures, hill-side tribes and Buddhist temples and monasteries. Laos lies bordering Thailand to the west and southeast, China and Myanmar towards the northwest, Vietnam in the east, and Cambodia lie in the southwest. Vientiane is the capital and is the location of the That Luang memorial, where a shrine holds the sacred relics of the Buddha’s breastbone. Other interesting sites include the Talat Sao, which is a morning market, filled with food, items of clothing and craftwork stalls. As well as the Patuxai war memorial is another significant attraction!

 Clothes

When it comes to clothes, make sure you pack lightweight clothes, preferably in natural cotton. Laos is a tropical country with a high level of humidity. You may sweat a lot, so wear comfortable clothing that allows the skin to breathe. Pack sufficient cotton t-shirts, shirts, light dresses, skirts, shorts, and trousers in light colours. There is no dress code as such, but it is best to dress modestly when visiting sites of religious importance such as temples. If travelling the colder months or journeying to the hilly regions, make sure to pack a few sweaters. A portable raincoat if visiting during the rainy season.

 Shoes

A pair of flip flops and a sturdy walking shoe will come in handy.  For the better part of your time, you will be in flip flops for sure. A comfortable pair of sandals or sneakers might also come in handy when you want to explore or go on some treks. Good waterproof trekking shoes if you plan on hiking through the jungle terrain.

 Sun protection

Sun protection is vital, as the sun is very harsh in these regions. A nice wide brim beach hat, sunglasses and loads of waterproof sunscreens are important. If possible, it is good to ensure the sunscreens are environmentally sound as well.

 First aid

Pack a small first aid kit with essential medication such as painkillers, cold medicine, mosquitoes/insect repellent, antiseptic, plasters and any daily medication you may take with prescriptions.

Miscellaneous

Pack a refillable water bottle so you can stay hydrated on the go. Some earplugs to block out noise if you want to sleep especially when travelling long distances sleeping. Light raincoat for the humid months and if you are scheduling water-based activities. If travelling to the jungle, know that it can also be hot and humid throughout the year, with sudden downpours!

Pack water-resistant clothing if you intend to do a lot of water-based activities such as river tubing, rafting and kayaking.

Electronics

It is best to keep electronics at a minimum, just so you can be present and enjoy your holiday all the more. However, key essentials include a universal power adaptor, so you can charge your electronic devices such as phones, and cameras.

A USB drive to hold all your important travel papers and photos

Get an unlocked mobile phone to use while in Laos with a local sim card. Overall, it is best to pack light, Laos has some amazing markets, with many trinkets and treasures you would probably want to bring back with you. So, make some room beforehand! While visiting the city Luang Prabang, Laos hotels such as the Avani+ Luang Prabang are a good option worth considering.
