How to visit grand palace in Bangkok - A must-visit highlight in Bangkok

Tipped to be among the most popular cultural attractions in the capital of Thailand, the Grand Palace is a must-visit highlight for all visitors touring Bangkok. Serving as the palatial residence of the Thai royal family, a vast portion of the palace and its extensive grounds are open to the public. From exploring the main hotspots to dressing appropriately, here are some guidelines on how to visit the one and only Grand Palace in Bangkok.

1. Get a Head Start

Those who wish to experience the beauty and majesty of the Grand Palace without contending with large throngs or having to endure the heat should get a head start when visiting the attraction. The Grand Palace is open to visitors from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm and first-time visitors should take care to arrive well before in order to be one of the first to be let inside the compound. As the busiest tourist highlights in the city, the crowds entering the Grand Palace only increase as the day wears on so getting inside before large numbers of tourists and the midday heat move-in is crucial. Although tourists are not charged for visiting Bangkok temples, the Grand Palace does require a ticket to enter. Those who wish to hire a guide will also find an official guide within the complex. Note that these guides are more reliable than those claiming to be guides outside the gates of the palace.

2. Dress Code

Tourists of all ages must be modestly dressed to be granted entrance to the Grand Palace even though the venue is technically not a religious institution. Commanding great respect among Thais, the royal family and the Wat Pho temple contained within the compound means that a certain dress and behavioural code must be followed when visiting the venue. Avoid wearing short-sleeved tops while pants or slacks must also extend well beyond the knee. The strict dress code enforced at the palace also means that all forms of revealing clothing (regardless of length) are also impermissible. Those who are inappropriately dressed will be verbally reprimanded before being handed sarongs to cover the revealing areas of the body.

3. Reaching the Venue

The best way to reach the Grand Palace is to hop on a river taxi to the destination and there are countless boat transfer options available on the Chao Praya River. Those who are based at a centrally located hotel in Asoke such as the Avani Atrium Bangkok, will need to reach the riverside via a BTS Sky train heading to the Saphan Taksin station. Visitors should then walk to the boat pier and board a vessel bound for the Tha Chang pier. From there one only needs to walk a short distance to reach the palace entrance.

4. Watch Out for Scams

Travellers should also be aware that the area around the Grand Palace in Bangkok is teeming with swindlers and scammers hoping to prey on unsuspecting tourists. As an area congested with tourists all day long, the palace has become a popular point of interest to dubious characters in the city. These individuals may claim that the palace is closed or offer their own itineraries or guide services instead or attempt to sell you a sarong or t-shirt claiming your attire is unacceptable.
