How to travel safely in Koh Samui?

Being vigilant and knowing the possible threats when travelling to a new destination is always wise. The same rule applies when you travel to Koh Samui as well. Koh Samui is, indeed, a very safe place for tourists, but issues can occur sometimes because it's always about busy roads and larger crowds. This article is about possible problems you can come across in Koh Samui so that you are prepared for everything of these. You have to be responsible for your safety, so check this out!

Refrain from driving as much as possible

If you are not a person who's used to driving in Asian countries (where there's a lot of traffic jams), you probably should not drive when you are in Thailand. Thailand is a country that is more prone to motor accidents due to the carelessness of drivers. The situation is worse is Koh Samui not because of other vehicles, but because of the poor road conditions. Even if you rent a motorbike (a scooter) and decide to drive it when exploring the local villages, make sure you are at your lowest speed and that you don't ride at night.

Deal carefully with the taxi drivers

In Koh Samui, you find two types of taxi services. Taxi meters and the pick-up taxis which are known as songthaews. If you choose to take a taxi meter, ask the driver to switch the meter on as soon as you get in the taxi. Even if the driver looks back and tries to discuss a 'so-called' good rate with you, don't accept it and just politely say that you'll go ahead with the meter rate. The pick-up taxis are more affordable than the taxi meters, but will not sometimes take you to the exact place you need to go as they have scheduled routes.

Enjoy the nightlife safely

During your stay at one of the Chaweng beach resorts the likes of Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, do not forget to enjoy the vibrant nightlife in Koh Samui. Go out, grab a beer, and enjoy your moments. Do not keep too much cash in your pockets because there is a chance of pickpockets being around. Thai people tend to get a little hot-tempered after a few drinks, so it's always better if you can avoid any scene without taking it to the next level.

Be careful when renting jet skis

Not just in Koh Samui, even in Phuket and Pattaya, Jet Ski scams are normal. What happens here is after you've rented a Jet Ski for a ride of 20-30 minutes and come ashore, the owner could complain that you have damaged his jet ski. So if you are clueless you will have to pay whatever the amount he demands. To avoid this, before you start your ride, take pictures as much as possible of the Jet Ski that you've been given. Take close-ups, so that you have proof when something bad happens. This is being smart, and you need that sometimes!

Be aware of the crawling creatures

Koh Samui is an island surrounded by lush vegetation. So, you can't expect the area to be free from centipedes, scorpions, and other insects. All you need to be is vigilant as much as possible, and take protective measures. Also use a mosquito repellent when in Koh Samui, especially if you've got allergic conditions.
